Silica oxide Sio2, are the basic composition of silica nanoparticles. They are used as additives for rubber and plastics, as a strengthening for concrete and other composites, as a drug delivery vehicles etc. It is very well seen that silica nanoparticle synthesis had contributed to the development of many fields, especially among civil and medicine.

Some silica nanoparticle synthesis and it's methods

Basic chemical reaction

Silica nanoparticles were formed by diluting sodium silicate solution with water under alkaline conditions with a mixture of ethanol and ammonia to form sol that is in nanoparticle in nature. This silica nanoparticles synthesis involves simple chemical reaction which does not require any complex chemical devices. Moreover, there is an enhanced production of sols and the sodium silicate solution acting as a limiting reagent. This method is both cost effective and highly efficient.

The sol - gel process

In this process, the transition of phase takes place. A sol containing silica is transformed into a gel which was initially in a colloidal form. This method has the potential to provide silica nanoparticle up to ~99 % (in terms of purity). The last process involved in the transition of gel to powder is by drying and ball milling. This is the final step towards the synthesis of pure-silica nanoparticles.

Synthesis of silica nanoparticles and its application

Drug delivery vehicle

It is used as a drug carrying medium, which is both safe and efficient. Silica nanoparticles are excreted out of our body easily. They do not lodge at crevices and cause troubles to immune systems. They are variable in sizes. The pore selectivity depends on the nature of antibiotic/antibody it carries.

Formation of thick concrete

Civil engineering is a wide discipline that takes many physical aspects into account. One important aspect of them is the durability of the materials synthesized. Synthesis of silica nanoparticles had revolutionized the civil field. The mortar is the mixture of fine sand, cement and water in the right proportion. Mixing silica nanoparticles with them enhances the coagulation effect thereby increasing the binding affinity and results in a strong concrete formation.

One unique property that silica nanoparticles synthesis exhibit is that, it is non-poisonous in nature. Also, it is highly inert - meaning- It does not react with unnecessary reactions in the atmosphere and release products that are harmful to both living beings and ecosystem. Hence they are both human and eco-friendly in nature.
